Government Fleets Protect their Organizations from False Claims

By Verizon Connect July 26, 2022

As fleet-based industries and organizations navigated the last few years, preparedness, connectivity and resilience became more critical than ever. This holds true for government agencies, which rely on large numbers of vehicles to serve constituents and complete critical public service tasks.

According to the 2022 Fleet Technology Trends Survey, GPS fleet tracking technology or telematics has helped government fleets address everyday challenges and unique obstacles.

The survey, conducted for Verizon Connect by Bobit Business Media, found that 65% of government fleets have implemented a GPS fleet tracking solution. The survey also revealed that, of those that use the technology, 83% of respondents said fleet technology helps protect their organization from false claims.

In addition to GPS fleet tracking, government fleets have also seen the value in deploying in-cab video and asset tracking technology to drive additional benefits for drivers and customers.

Let’s take a deeper dive into how government fleets are using GPS fleet tracking, AI-backed video telematics and asset tracking to help boost productivity, lower costs, protect drivers and reduce response time.

Government fleets see improved ROI and increased productivity

In the 2022 Fleet Technology Trends Survey, government fleets were asked if fleet tracking technology impacts overall ROI. The answer was a resounding yes. In fact, 62% of government fleets achieved a positive ROI on their GPS fleet tracking investment, and 32% saw an ROI in less than a year.

When asked to rank the biggest impact that telematics technology has on their operations, improved vehicle maintenance stood out as the top benefit, with 47% of government fleets reporting that they were able to prioritize vehicle maintenance. This improvement is thanks to alerts, diagnostics and scheduling of preventative maintenance options.

Government fleets have also found that using GPS fleet tracking is critical to help them address other top concerns like:

  • Routing: 43% of respondents said the technology helps optimize routes and more efficiently deploy vehicles.
  • Improved productivity: 43% of respondents said the technology helps improve their drivers’ productivity.
  • Customer Service: 35% noted that they were able to improve customer service and reduce response times with the help of live maps and full route displays.

It’s clear from these results that GPS tracking can help support fleet management and ROI. From smart dashboards to optimized routes and reduced idling, government fleet managers are empowered with the ability to address their most critical fleet operations issues and protect their drivers.

Fleet safety and security

In addition to fleet tracking technology, the 2022 Fleet Technology Trends Survey highlighted how government fleets are relying on in-cab video telematics and asset tracking to promote driver safety and secure vehicle assets.

AI-backed video telematics with driver-facing and front-facing cameras is reshaping safety and efficiency for fleets. Fleet businesses can see how smart video can serve as an unbiased witness, an incomparable driver training tool, and a goldmine of data.

The ability to do more with the vehicles and assets they already own is critical for government fleets, especially as they deal with competing factors like reduced budgets and increased fuel and oil prices. Asset tracking solutions provide visibility into how, when and where vehicles and equipment are being used.

The right tools for government fleets

Preparedness, connectivity and resiliency will continue to be cornerstones of success for government fleets well into 2022 and beyond. Fleet tracking technology gives government fleet managers the tools they need to help improve fleet operations and better address the critical needs of the customers and constituents that they serve.

It's clear from the results of the 2022 Fleet Technology Trends Survey that those government fleets which have implemented telematics and asset tracking solutions are already reaping the benefits.
