Frequently asked questions

What is DOT compliance?

Administered through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance affects millions of commercial drivers throughout North America and includes hours of service rules (such as the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate) and driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs).

What do I need to be DOT compliant?

To be compliant with federal law at all times requires the recording of vehicle and driver information. This information, such as the drivers location are best logged at specified increments automatically through our GPS fleet management solution. In addition, our mobile apps facilitate HOS compliance by providing and ELD for drivers as well as DVIR inspection reports.

How do I check my DOT compliance?

The formal, external Carrier Safety Administration (CSA) scoring by the FMCSA reflects actual checks and audits. Using our ELD app provides internal monitoring to get ahead of problems through an HOS violations report before a roadside inspection or an actual check or audit takes place.

What types of violations can be raised?

There are 4 different types of violations that are supported by the ELD. These are Cycle on-duty violations, Daily on-duty violations, Daily driving violations and Mandatory break violations.

Possible causes for these violations are:

  • Driving after exceeding the permitted on-duty limit for your cycle
  • Not taking a long enough break to reset your cycle
  • Forgetting to change your status to Off Duty when a cycle reset was required
  • Driving for more than 8 cumulative hours without taking a rest break of at least 30 minutes

Will the Verizon Connect compliance software stop my DOT and FMCSA violations?

Just having an ELD does not prevent HOS violations. However a system with powerful reporting and visibility tools can help uncover bad behaviors through reports and dashboards.

How does the Verizon Connect compliance software help with FMCSA inspections?

Using our mobile app, drivers can use Roadside Inspection Mode and share only the legally required information (last 7 days) with inspectors. In the event of a full audit, additional, in-depth reports can be produced to demonstrate compliance.

How do I log/report my DOT compliance obligations?

ELD and HOS reports are proof of compliant driver activity. Drivers need to certify their logs at the end of each day. When Driver logs are requested by a roadside officer or during an audit one may use the feature in the Logbook app to send ELD transmission files to the FMCSA.

Does the Verizon Connect solution cover all my DOT compliance obligations?

We focus on a narrow area of the Behavior Analysis Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). and there are areas that we don't help with, The BASICs include:

  • Unsafe driving
  • HOS compliance
  • Driver fitness
  • Controlled substances and alcohol
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Hazardous materials compliance
  • Crash indicator

Will Verizon Connect compliance software help me improve my CSA program score?

Drivers' hours of service are monitored in near real-time. Warnings inform you that you are approaching a violation of your permitted hours of service (HOS).

Is there a risk of my drivers manipulating their HOS?

In the ELD drivers can edit their own logs and choose their own On/Off Duty statuses. Drivers cannot remove or reduce drive time. If the vehicle is being driven without a driver connected an Unidentified Driving events occurs and the fleet manager is alerted to assign or Marked Exempt the event.
