Improve your coaching with more eyes on the road

By Holly Dempster December 11, 2020

There are many varied components to a successful fleet. You need the right vehicles, the right people, the right tools – and, of course, a demanding and satisfied customer base. But one factor that often gets overlooked is the importance of coaching.

Hiring the right people is just the beginning. To truly unlock their potential, business owners need to train them throughout their employment and encourage them to improve.

When you regularly coach your employees, you can reduce common mistakes, strengthen the skillsets at your disposal, boost productivity and improve staff retention. GPS fleet management technology can help.

With masses of fleet data at your fingertips, you can use real-world insight to improve your teams and get the best out of your people. Here’s how:

Stay in the know

A near-real-time 360-degree view of your fleet’s daily operations, along with historical location, performance and usage data, brings many benefits. With access to this information, you can work to reduce costs, increase productivity and spot inefficiencies.

But that’s not all. When you know exactly where your people are, where they’ve been and what they’re doing, you can use real events to coach more productive, safe and efficient behaviours.

Is a driver detouring from a given route? Are vehicles spending too much time idling? Is there a discrepancy between fuel filled and fuel consumed? Your fleet management solution can provide the answers to these questions and more – allowing you to change behaviours, reduce waste and boost efficiency.

Create friendly competition

Data on behaviour and performance can also be used to create friendly competition among your workforce.

Choose your metric (safety, fuel consumption, idling etc.) and create a scorecard for every driver. The better they perform, the higher their score. You can then use these scores to run incentive programmes and create team, department, or companywide leaderboards.

While those at the top can be rewarded, perhaps most importantly, those near the other end can be coached to improve.

When field workers can see the real-world impact of their habits and behaviours, they are often more engaged and motivated to work differently. As they adapt their style, they increase their score and climb up the leaderboard.

Create a culture

Coaching out inefficient behaviours can bring about quick results. You’ll soon see the impact of less time spent idling, for example. But using your fleet data in this way can also bring about long-term change.

When you can see exactly how your teams are performing – where they are, what they’re doing and for how long – you can easily implement and police any policies you put in place.

This could be a safe driving policy, one outlining personal use allowances, or mandating environmentally friendly driving. Whatever it is, you can verify it’s being followed when you have live and historical fleet data only ever a couple of clicks away.

Coaching is much improved when policies are in place. It’s easier to train your teams when you have clearly defined standards and everyone understands what is expected of them.

Get eyes on the road

One of the most direct ways to study and improve field worker behaviour is to watch what they do out on the road. Fleet management technology equipped with integrated video allows you to do exactly that.

As well as helping to mitigate risk, an integrated video solution gives you unparalleled insight into poor driving, unsafe or reckless behaviour and road accidents.

When such an incident occurs, you can quickly look at footage to understand what happened. View footage alongside your fleet data and you’ll have a complete picture of the incident, including driver speed and vehicle location.

With this information to hand, you can determine blame, decide on next steps and discuss areas for improvement with your drivers.

Verizon Connect Integrated Video
